This past Friday morning, following the 7:40 AM Mass, the St. Joseph Regional High School hockey team gathered in the chapel to receive a special blessing from Fr. Johan Betancourt. In his message to the players, Fr. Betancourt emphasized the importance of keeping Jesus at the center of their lives, not only in their faith but also in their athletic endeavors. He encouraged the team to play with integrity, sportsmanship, and respect for their opponents, reminding them that being a gentleman on and off the ice is part of what it means to be a Green Knight.
Following his inspiring message, Fr. Betancourt blessed the players. This blessing included asking for God’s guidance and protection over the athletes as they begin their season. Fr. Betancourt offered prayers for their safety, teamwork, and commitment to the values of good sportsmanship.
The message and blessing offer a meaningful way to connect the players’ passion for hockey with their faith. It serves as a reminder that they are not just athletes but also representatives of their school and faith community, embodying the spirit of Vir Fidelis, which calls them to be "Faithful Men" in all aspects of life. By dedicating their season to God, the players are encouraged to compete with integrity, kindness, and a spirit of camaraderie, honoring the true purpose of athletic competition.
As the team prepares for the upcoming season, they do so with the words of Fr. Betancourt in their hearts, ready to face every game with both skill and grace. Let’s go, Green Knights!
