It’s 2023 and with the commencement of the new year, we are ecstatic to see what lies ahead for another fantastic year of cinema. Before 2023 releases are covered, however, we would like to take this opportunity to reflect on 2022, a revelatory year for the film industry that managed a near-perfect amalgamation of both great blockbuster movies and stunning, eclectic, original films. Below are my top five blockbuster 2022 releases.
- Bullet Train
Directed by David Leitch, Bullet Train is an action-thriller film. Taking place on a speeding train in Japan, a group of assassins find themselves caught up in a deadly game of cat and mouse as they try to carry out their missions. The entire film is fast-paced and highly entertaining. It will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. With its thrilling action sequences, unpredictable twists, and intense storyline, the film will appeal to fans of the action and thriller genres.
- Top Gun Maverick
The film features breathtaking aerial footage and pulse-pounding action scenes, as Maverick is drawn into a new conflict that threatens to escalate into a global catastrophe. The entire film is a thrilling, nostalgic, and highly entertaining movie that will appeal to fans of the original, as well as those who enjoy action movies. The film is praised for its stunning visuals, engaging storyline, and electrifying action sequences, as well as Tom Cruise's dynamic performance.
- Black Panther Wakanda Forever
It's difficult to make a sequel to a film that was so important to so many people. On top of all that, it's even harder to make a sequel when the lead actor has unfortunately passed away. Nonetheless, Black Panther Wakanda Forever is first and foremost, a beautiful send off for Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa. It’s a thrilling and emotional continuation of the first film, with a strong focus on themes of unity, tradition, and the importance of honoring one's heritage. The film is well-received by audiences and praised for its stunning visuals, heart-pumping action sequences, and powerful performances.
- Avatar: The Way of Water
The long awaited sequel to one of the most groundbreaking movies of the generation is one of the best movies of the year. Avatar: The Way of Water is by far the best continuation to the first film possible, featuring a fantastic story-line. It follows an entirely different format by introducing new characters, new species of creatures, and new cast members. This film, much like Avatar, is awe inspiring. James Cameron is able to carefully and meaningfully enrapture the audience into the Avatar world. This film's brilliance shines through every possible critique.
- The Batman
Matt Reeves’ The Batman is one of the most influential comic book movies of all time, one that took inspiration from comic books such as: Batman The Long Halloween, Batman Ego and Batman Year One. This entire film was made with such reverence and care for the source material that it is sensed in every scene. The best parts of the movie are the performances by Robert Pattinson and the rest of the cast, who each embody their roles perfectly. The plot and setting enhance the movie’s depth even more than the performances. The Batman shows the Dark Knight being “the world's greatest detective” while still allowing him to be young and amateurish at the same time. From the score, to the acting and cinematography, to the writing and emotional beats, The Batman is easily my pick for the best movie of the year and has earned its spot as one of the best comic book movies of all time.
