By Michael Kaminsky '24

Saint Joseph Regional High School recently held an assembly for all of our students on Tuesday, March 5th, to discuss the dangers of compulsive and addictive gambling. Joseph Kane, a Prevention Specialist from The Council on Compulsive Gambling in New Jersey, spoke with the boys to address the harsh and growing problem of gambling amongst teenagers.  Mr. Kane shared his personal story and struggles with gambling addiction and made the students aware of the dangers and warning signs associated with gambling.

During the assembly, Mr. Kane emphasized the importance of recognizing the early signs of gambling addiction highlighting how easily it can spiral out of control.  He stressed the significance of seeking help and support if anyone finds themselves or their peers struggling with compulsive gambling behaviors. Through his own personal anecdotes and insights alongside various state statistics, he stressed the detrimental impact gambling could have not only on individual gamblers but also on their families, friends, and communities.  His own story certainly resonated deeply with the students creating a sense of awareness and responsibility.

As the assembly concluded, students were encouraged to ask questions about gambling-related issues with its rise in popularity amongst teenagers and rise in accessibility with online gambling.  Saint Joseph Regional High School reaffirmed its commitment to providing assistance to students by including Mr. Kane’s personal contact information as a resource in the newly opened Wellness Center.  By equipping the boys with knowledge and resources through the meeting with Mr. Kane, the assembly was a great learning opportunity for our community and brought light and awareness to a rapidly expanding issue within our regional area.
